Complete Travel Guide of Malaysia
Malaysian Visa
It is amazing how many
channels one has to go through before being able to enter a country. Some
people would have to jump through hoops and back just to have a relaxing
holiday experience. Here are some guidelines for entry and visa requirements
for Malaysia to make your preparation a little easier and hopefully, prevent
any unwanted dramas at the airport.
As for Visa requirements,
Malaysia is pretty straight forward. U.S citizens entering Malaysia for
business, pleasure or academic purpose need not have a visa (unless for
employment purposes). All nationals of ASEAN countries, with the exception of
Myanmar, are also given this privilege. Most foreign nationals from
Commonwealth countries are also allowed to enter and exit Malaysia with ease.
For a detailed list of visa requirements based on countries and duration of
stay as well as instructions on applying for a visa, visit the website of the
Immigration Department of Malaysia.
As with every other country,
entry into Malaysia requires a valid national passport or an internationally
recognized travel document which is valid for travel to Malaysia. Your
passport should be valid for more than 6 months from the date of entry into
Malaysia. But even with a visa and a valid passport, there are some cases in
which travellers are prohibited from entering the country. Previously
convicted felons and people who are suffering from a contagious disease are
just some of these examples. For a detailed list, visit the Immigration
Department’s website and search for “prohibited persons”.
As for customs, it is pretty
clear cut. No drugs, no illegal substances and no weapons are allowed into
the country. The restrictions for food items are pretty wide open though.
Upon arrival at the airport, travellers are allowed to bring in 1 carton of
cigarettes as well as 1 bottle of alcohol. Anything that exceeds will be
confiscated.
Now that you are armed with
the proper information for entry requirements, we move on to the exit. With
so much to see and do in Malaysia, it might come to a point where you have no
time. You might just decide to extend your stay but do bear in mind that
there is a limit to your stay. Please check your travel documents for the
permitted duration of stay or ask the immigrations officer for more
information about overstaying. You wouldn’t want to be slapped with a hefty
penalty for overstaying your welcome.
Be sure to check with the
Immigrations Department if you have any questions pertaining to entry and
visa requirements as well as duration of stay. Do not attempt to save time
and effort by engaging the services of a middleman to handle all your
documents. A slip by them might cause u to lose RM10 000 in fines or even 5
years in jail. For more information, please call the Immigrations Department
of Malaysia at +603 8880 1000.
